  2. GREAT LEADER NEEDS GREAT FOLLOWERS

“Everything of significance a leader accomplishes happens not just because of his or her efforts, but through the efforts of others.”

Behind the success of every great leader there is the support, hard work and invisible struggle of many unknown people who are known as the ‘followers’. Without the support and commitment of good followers the birth of great personalities would have been unimaginable.

Many leaders miserably failed and did not rise because of the lousy followers they had.

I also strongly believe that no doubt we need excellent leaders to take us to the future, but we also need good followers to help these leaders realise their dreams. For them to be called good followers they need to possess certain qualities like...........
Great followers are not afraid to challenge the leader when they feel the leader is making a mistake or going down the wrong path. A follower must be courageous enough to voice his or her opinion, challenge current thinking and challenge leadership decisions that they believe are misguided or unethical.
The truth of the matter is, it takes both the leader and the follower working together in a dynamic relationship, each one clearly executing on the critical role they have in the relationship, to accomplish effective leadership.

  3. Hi, the comment is on a positive note but all leaders are not effective, a good leader's very first quality is that he needs to be effective in whatever he does and in order to have that s/he needs to be dynamic, approachable and proactive.
Ya, truly said, followers also define leaders, but what exactly are the followers following one needs to be clear on that.

Not all have those qualities that make him a leader among others some become leader by attributes which they have, some are born with it, some are just stubborn to become one no matter how. Its the path and the goal the leader is aiming at which is important and which will be beneficial not only to many but to the society at large.

So i think that its the person who is attributed as a leader but a person a called "GOOD & EFFECTIVE LEADER" by the path that he chooses and his definition for what is the "CHANGE" that s/he can bring.

  4. Hi Nandini,

I think you are right to some extent, Andy should have given some inputs on that what exactly are the followers following...... And you are right about good leader's very first quality... and you can also add my inputs to that "A leader must follow their followers. Unless you really know the people you are trying to lead, you will never be able to lead them successfully".

A great leader must be a great listener: yes. Leading involves learning, of course, but being a leader is about taking the lead and calling the shots; leading is not about following what someone else would do.If as a leader, you are not ready to know what your followers want, then how can you lead them.

  5. Hey Nandini/Ananth,
Your comments are on leaders but what I said is about “Great" leaders.
What you said is true, all leaders are not effective, that’s because of some lousy followers.
You said leader should be dynamic, approachable and proactive, which is what I said in the last four lines you can match them with what you said “In a dynamic relationship, each one clearly executing on the critical role they have in the relationship, to accomplish effective leadership”. And what exactly followers are following? They eliminate foolishness and stupidity and bring in excellence.
What you expressed in your last two paragraphs’ are on good note but should have been little more specific on how the leader aims path and goal. I can put some light on that

What the SMART goal setting guidelines actually mean is that your goals should be
    Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Rewarding, Timely

Visualisation is a powerful technique that helps you see the path you need ... Be realistic about your aims.
“Managing is Power over People but Leadership is Power with People.”
Here “with people” is nothing but to know the people and to listen them.

    Andy.
